
THE PRIMARY GRADES ART AND MUSIC – KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THIRD GRADE The early years introduce children to music and art. In music, children sing, play games that involve songs and tunes, and get the chance to experiment with different instruments. Lessons teach about concepts such as rhythm, pitch, and volume. Students also learn some basics of reading music (e.g., that music is written down as notes on a staff). They grow familiar with different instruments and the sounds they make. They listen to a wide range of recordings-timeless classics such as Bach’s ]esu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, folk songs such as “On Top of Old Smokey,” ancient strains such as dance songs of the Southwestern lndians. Art lessons include activities such as painting, drawing, and craft-making. Children learn about elements such as shape, color, form, and texture. They look at some famous examples of sculpture, painting, photography, design, and architecture-such as Winslow Homer’s Snap the Whip, King Tut’s mummy case, or the White Heron Castle of Japan.
