HELPING YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL
A seventh grade teacher, Monica Jones, received a call from the deputy superintendent when her students received some of the highest performance test scores in Washington, D.C. He wanted her secret. ” I told him it was parents ‘ involvement, ” says Jones. ” I might’ve taken credit, I guess. I might have told him about my lesson plans, how often we go to the library, how I get them to write essays, or how inspired the students. But I know in my heart that if I didn’t have parents ‘ support, my students wouldn’t do that well. ” If there is one thing that educators can agree on, it’s this: children do better in school when their parents learn. They tend to have higher grades and fewer problems with behavior. They like school more and are aspiring higher. They’re more likely to go to university. These effects intersect socio-economic. All evidence points to the support of parents as one of the most important factors in the academic success of a child.
Unfortunately, many mothers and fathers are not as careful as they ought to be. In an overwhelming number of cases, teachers claim that students are less academically motivated today than they were 10 to 20 years ago, mainly due to low parental involvement and supervision. They say that many parents spend less time with their children, give them fewer demands and have less contact with their school lives. These trends make teachers hard-pressed. Even an excellent school without help from home cannot provide good education.
